Founded in the stormy days of the late 1960's, Dortmund University has retained much of the dynamic of that period. It combines the academic excellence characteristic of the traditional German university system with modern commitments to innovative teaching and proactive leadership in the community. Among its 25,000 students are some 2,000 degree students from abroad. A faculty/student ratio of 1:19 assures a productive learning environment and individualised attention. The University is situated in the west end of Dortmund. This city of 600,000 inhabitants in the Ruhr area has grown into a modern centre of business, high-tech industry, education, and culture with half of the city's incorporated area being devoted to green spaces: gardens, parks, and even forests. The Ruhr is a major metropolitan area, with Cologne and the vineyards of the Rhine Valley on the periphery. |
