China star up for key Party award  

Yao Ming is a major player in the US basketball league
The Chinese basketball superstar Yao Ming has been nominated for a special Communist Party award, in a move that has caused controversy in China.
National "model worker" status is usually reserved for those doing less glamorous jobs, such as miners, teachers and factory workers.

Millionaire Yao Ming is a top player in the US basketball league, the NBA.

He is one of 2,977 candidates for the model worker honour, which will be awarded on 30 April in Beijing.

The Shanghai Municipal Judging Panel for Model Workers, which nominated Yao, argued that the baseball player had acted as "a perfect image ambassador for China in the eyes of the world", Xinhua state news agency reported.

Yao, who plays for the Houston Rockets, has become a household name in China because of his success in the US.
