Abstract:
Materials Science and Engineering is an interdisciplinary study which combines metallurgy, physics, chemistry, and engineering. Subfields include ceramics, biomechanics, semiconductor processing, polymer science, corrosion studies, and environmental studies. Your world is made of materials, and that is what we teach and research. Be it computer chip or brick or foam, they are all materials to us. Do not believe it, then ask IBM, GM, Exxon, Intel, Alcoa…, they are all materials companies, who need better materials to make a better product and a better world.
Whether it could be called a revolution or simply a continuous evolution, it is clear that developing and understanding of nano-meter-scale materials is on the front-line research in many areas of materials science and engineering. Up to date, nano-materials, nano-structures, and nano-technology are investigated heavily. Nano research provides a new era for materials innovation to meet the development of modern science and technology. When materials scale turns into nano range, novel properties are displayed, which in general do not occur in conventional materials with micron or submicron structures.
This talk gives a basic introduction to materials science and engineering, especially to nano functional materials: their concepts, fabrication, and applications. The materials discussed include thermoelectrics, piezoelectrics, dielectrics, ferroelectrics, and ionics. In addition, the briefs on sintering modeling, composite, and functional graded material (FGM) are also presented.
