Jacksonville - Government researchers published findings this weekthat show a chemical component of rocket fuel, perchlorate, has beenfound in all 15 of the major brands of baby formulathey tested.
The report, published in the March 2009 issue of Nature’s“Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology” showed that although the perchlorate levels found were within the safe rangeas defined by the Environmental Protection Agency there may be some concern for infants and children. (尽管在其中发现的高氯酸盐含量在环境保护局定义的安全标准之内,但是仍有可能会对婴幼儿带来影响)
As many as 35 US States have beenfound to have perchlorate in their drinking water, and it has been alsobeen found in vegetables, cows milk, and according to one study, humanbreast milk. Perchlorate in ground water flows into grass that the cowseat, and thereby is passed along into milk.

abcNews - When a parent puts a bottle of baby formula to a child's lips, the parent might not know exactly what ingredients are in that thick, nutritionally packed mix. But rocket fuel? That's not an ingredient many expect to find.
A study by government researchers released Thursday tested 15 different brands of formula and found a chemical -- also found in rocket fuel -- contaminating every single one.
While the levels of the chemical, perchlorate, have been deemed safe by the Environmental Protection Agency, some worry public health is at risk. (尽管高氯酸盐的含量被环境保护局认为是安全的,有些人仍然担心公共安全处于危险之中)
cientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tested the formula for the presence of perchlorate, a chemical used as the main ingredient in solid rocket fuel. It's a worry because perchlorate can interfere with the production of thyroid hormones by inhibiting the absorption of iodine.

ATLANTA – Traces of a chemical used in rocket fuel were found in samples of powdered baby formula, and could exceed what's considered a safe dose for adults if mixed with water also contaminated with the ingredient, a government study has found.
The study by scientists at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked for the chemical, perchlorate, in different brands of powdered baby formula. It was published last month, but the Environmental Working Group — a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy organization — issued a press release Thursday drawing attention to it.
The chemical has turned up in several cities' drinking water supplies. It can occur naturally, but most perchlorate contamination has been tied to defense and aerospace sites.
No tests have ever shown the chemical caused health problems, but scientists have said significant amounts of perchlorate can affect thyroid function. (没有实验证明高氯酸盐会引起健康问题,但是科学家声称高含量的高氯酸盐会影响甲状腺功能)The thyroid helps set the body's metabolism. Thyroid problems can impact fetal and infant brain development.
However, the extent of the risk is hard to assess. The government requires that formula contain iodine, which counteracts perchlorate's effects. The size of the infant and how much formula they consume are other factors that can influence risk. |
