讲座内容简介/Brief introduction of the lecture
Sino-German Relations in the late 19th and early 20th century are normally only regarded under two aspects: The Occupation of Jiaozhou Bay and the German intervention in the course of the Boxer Uprising. But relations between both countries in the late Qing era were much more complex. Although Germany had entered the semi-colonial treaty system with the Treaty of Tianjin in 1861 and tried to establish the elements of the “toolbox” of the Western Powers in China, we also find many aspects of partnership, for example the naval cooperation around the Beiyang Fleet and the fortifications of the Northern Chinese Coasts.
In this paper, Eberspaecher will give a general idea of the characteristics of Sino-German relations in the late Qing era and shed light on several hitherto rarely known episodes. Going beyond the older approaches of imperialism and modernism from the Western perspective, which mainly regarded China as object, he will also take Chinese views, considerations and strategies into account.
